چکیده

The sugarbeet cyst nematode, Heterodera schachtii Schmidt, 1871, was discovered by Mai et al. (4) in fields of 16 New York State commercial red table beet growers during a survey in 1970-1971. They reported that the clover cyst nematode, H. trifolii Goffart, 1932, which also has lemon-shaped cysts with bullae, was present in very low numbers in many of the fields sampled. Thus a rapid and reliable method was needed to differentiate cysts of these nematodes in the many soil samples collected. Several workers have suggested that lemon-shaped cysts ofHeterodera spp. could be separated by vulval cone structures (1, 2, 3, 5, 6). Oostenbrink and Den Ouden (6) suggested that for practical advisory work fenestral length may be useful in differentiating cysts of H. schachtii and H. trifolii. They reported that the average fenestral lengths of H. schachtii and H. trifolii were 32.1 and 45.6/l, respectively. They also concluded that "an average of five specimens is adequate to place a population below or above 38.7, which is the limiting value between the two species according to statistical treatment of the presented data". Fenestral lengths reported by Mulvey (5) and Jimenez (3) substantiated this finding. Mulvey (5 ) a l so reported that no statistical correlation occurred

Comparative Morphometrics of Eggs and Second-Stage Juveniles of Heterodera schachtii and a Race of H. trifolii Parasitic on Sugarbeet in The Netherlands.

Measurements of second-stage juveniles of Heterodera schachtii from California and The Netherlands and a race of H. trifolii from The Netherlands were obtained and compared to determine if these populations can be differentiated by morphometrics. Juvenile lengths of 10 specimens from each of 10 cysts of each population were measured. Dimensions of tail regions of 20 juveniles from individual cy...

A Comparison of the Hatching of Juveniles from Cysts of Heterodera schachtii and H. trifolii.

The effects of root diffusates of selected plants within the families Chenopodiaceae and Cruciferae and the hatching agent zinc chloride were tested for their effects on hatching and emergence of juveniles from cysts of Heterodera schachtii and a race of H. trifolii parasitic on Chenopodaceae and Cruciferae in The Netherlands. Although all diffusates strongly stimulated hatching of juveniles of...

Susceptibility of plant selections to Heterodera schachtii and a race of H. trifolii parasitic on Sugarbeet in The Netherlands.

Similar host ranges were found for Heterodera schachtii and a race of H. trifolii parasitic on sugarbeet in The Netherlands. Twenty-nine of 41 plant accessions evaluated were susceptible to H. trifolii. Five breeding lines of the interspecific hybrid Beta vulgaris-B. procumbens which are resistant to H. schachtii were highly susceptible to H. trifolii. An accession of B. maritima with partial r...

Invasion of Sugarbeet Leaf Blades by Larvae of Heterodera schachtii.

Although Polychronopolis and Lownsbery (1) found that Heterodera schachtii invaded the radicle, hypocotyl, and cotyledons of seedling sugarbeet, they observed no histological or cytological changes other than cellular death and disorganization. Ross (2) reported development of females and brown cysts accompanied by formation of giant cells and hypertrophy in leaves of white clover inoculated wi...

Morphometric and serologic comparisons of a number of populations of cyst nematodes.

Thirty-five populations of Heterodera glycines and populations of 15 other Heterodera, Globodera, and Punctodera species were studied morphometrically and some were compared serologically. There was a wide range of each measurement within each nematode population. Except for one soybean cyst nematode population from Indiana, which was a tetraploid and considerably larger than the others, morpho...
